    SPECIAL SOUTHERN DECADENCE EVENT

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Decadent Duck Events has arranged a special event with author Paul A. Harris, who wrote Diary From The Dome: Reflections on Fear and Privilege During Katrina.

Paul Harris will join us for a very special talk about his experiences with an interactive Question and Answer session.  He will also sign copies of his book.

Please note, anyone may attend this event, there is no charge.  If you would like to pre-order a book for him to sign, please select that option when signing up, and a book will be available for you at the event for Paul to sign.

Please note that due to space constraints, we may not be able to accommodate anyone who does not pre-register.  This event will take place in the Penthouse at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel, 7th floor, just outside the pool entrance.

Information about the book and Paul Harris

Paul A. Harris was visiting New Orleans when hurricane Katrina struck and devastated the city.  Unable to flee the city, Paul was approximately the 400th person to enter the Superdome.  When Katrina hit land the power went out and the backup generators kicked in, but there was no more air conditioning, plumbing, and they had only about 50% of the lighting they had had before losing power.  Soon thereafter part of the roof of the Superdome blew off.  A storm was not only brewing outside, but inside the Superdome as well.  Due to a lack of communication, a lack of leadership, rumors and misinformation, life inside of  the Superdome became a hellhole and full of mayhem.  The thousands upon thousands inside of the Superdome during this horrific time now found themselves playing a real life "survivor in the dome" game.  Only this was not a game, this nightmare was really happening and those inside the Superdome didn't know if they would escape with their lives intact.  Running out of water and food, surrounded by filth and unsanitary conditions, those inside the Superdome became desperate.

Diary From The Dome is a wonderfully written account of Paul A. Harris' own experience inside of the Superdome when Hurricane Katrina hit and during the days after.  Like many others, it was days before Paul would be able to flee the destruction of Katrina and escape New Orleans.  I thank Paul for sharing his story with us.  The pictures Paul shares in his book make the Superdome experience even more real to the rest of America who weren’t inside of the Superdome but who were wondering, worrying, and (yes even) praying for those stuck there.

The first non-fiction book written by a Superdome evacuee.

Available from the publisher, toll free 1-800-882-3273 or online at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.   Only $12.95 or $4.99 on Kindle.

(A minimum of 25% of author profits from the sale of new books will be donated to non-profit organizations in the New Orleans area.)

    • 700 Club, 700 Burgundy, New Orleans, LA
Candy Samples, the podcasting queen and songstress of New York City, is coming back to New Orleans to perform Sunday Services on Sunday September 5 at The 700 Club (700 Burgundy Street) from 11:30AM to 1:30PM. This pre-parade show, presented by the Decadent Ducks, is one-day-only and not to be missed.

A smash-hit last year, Ms. Samples returns in her favorite French Quarter bar to tell the tales of a gal who has sinned and ready to repent.  Spread the word and pour the drinks, ‘cause Candy is back and telling it like it is!
     CandyBanner.png
Full of Southern charm and sweet as licorice, the mistress of the microphone sings a mix of her signature original tunes and covers, including gospel, jazz, and rock and roll.  Her debut CD Sample This! is available as a digital-only release on iTunes, Rhapsody and Amazon.  Whether country (“Green Bean Casserole”), pop (“Boy Crazy”) or even a classic heartfelt ballad (“Slow Dance”), Ms. Samples plucks the heartstrings with sweet style and her trademark gloves. New Orleans audiences will remember Ms. Samples from her hilarious Larry Craig-inspired video “Tap Tap”  and Decadence-inspired anthem “Boy Crazy” playing in video bars throughout the French Quarter.  This year Candy has another treat for Southern Decadence goers, with a new single and music video to debut.

“Southern Decadence is like coming home,” says Ms. Samples.  “It just wouldn’t be right to come down without releasing a new song and video for such wonderful fans and friends.”

Candy Samples is a staple in the drag community, having worked throughout NYC for the past ten years. Her podcast The Candy Show is in its fourth year, available free on iTunes.  When not performing, Candy lends her talents to such causes as Marriage Equality New York and Camp Starlight, a camp for children affected by HIV/AIDS.

Miss Samples has announced a challenge to her listeners and fans this year - to ‘use your powers for good’. Whether participating in local politics, volunteering for a local charity or just being a good neighbor, Candy is trying to spread hugs and Hershey Kisses throughout America in 2010.

Candy's Sunday Service's at the 700 Club is presented by the Decadent Ducks.

    The Atlantis Cruise. Reinvented.

Atlantis Liberty Cruise - Gay Couple on Pool Deck

The rumors are true and reality is even sweeter. In 2011, Atlantis will be the first company to charter the largest cruise ship ever built: the brand new Allure of the Seas. We’re celebrating 20 years of all-gay vacations with a remarkable cruise on the largest and most extravagant ship ever built. It won’t be like anything you’ve ever experienced before, and it will be unforgettable.

Take a look at the video on the right, browse our deckplans, and spend a few minutes on the RCCL site to get a preview of her. Finally, see below for answers to commonly asked questions about Allure and how Atlantis will create this fantastic cruise.

Allure is the sister to the groundbreaking Oasis of the Seas, first sailing in December 2010. She’s the largest ship ever built, at 220,000 tons and carrying over 5500 gay and lesbian guests from around the world. Our cruise will truly be a community of epic proportions. Royal Caribbean has created an excellent mini-site with video, photos, and stories about the Oasis and Allure ships. We recommend taking a look here: www.oasisoftheseas.com

    Answers to Common Questions
Our cruise onboard Allure will be very different from past Atlantis cruises, with more entertainment and more diversity than anything we’ve ever created in the past. Here are a few answers to the questions we keep hearing:

How will we fit everyone in the Theater?
Simply put, we won’t. the main theater holds around 1500 guests and we’ll run at least 3 or 4 showings of every major show to accommodate all guests. There will be multiple shows running at any given moment in the theater, Studio B, and the AquaTheater. The Allure has a ticketing system to allow you to reserve your space effortlessly so you will always be guaranteed a seat. It’s a great system and works really, really well!

Where will the deck parties be held?
More great news! The Solarium at the front of the ship is one of the most perfect spaces for a party we’ve ever seen. Most of our parties will be held in that space, and a few indoor events will be in Studio B. The best part about the Solarium is that there are no staterooms below it (it’s the kids center), so we don’t anticipate any issues with noise.

We might try to hold a t-dance in the AquaTheater, but these would only be during the late afternoon. We are not planning any outdoor parties at night in either the Boardwalk or AquaTheater spaces at this time due to noise concerns.

    What’s the AquaTheater?
It’s the most amazing space you’ve ever seen on a ship, composed of a massive water stage and pool surrounded by high-diving platforms. The Aqua Show was produced by the team that created “O” in Las Vegas and will amaze you. We’ll also likely use the space for a concert show. Many guests in Boardwalk rooms have fantastic balcony views of the shows!

    Will there be a Headliner?
We’re still putting our entertainment plan together for the Allure and will probably not use a single “big name” as we’ve done in the past. It’s simple logistics, since we’d need to have them perform 4 shows and this is not likely to be feasible. That said, there is a full Broadway production onboard, the Aqua Show, and a flying show that is truly the largest show ever built on a ship. We’ll likely bring two or three amazing acts, plus a cadre of Atlantis favorites to celebrate our anniversary.

Why would I want a Central Park View?
Well, Central Park is one of the most beautiful spaces ever created on a ship with lush landscaping and subtle lighting at night. Depending on your taste, a view into the park is a welcome, mostly wind-free way to truly enjoy a balcony view at night. There’s always something to see, versus looking out into the darkness in the Ocean. Ultimately, it’s personal taste, but our team loved these rooms on our site visit.

    Is the Boardwalk Noisy?
Once you close your stateroom door, you truly cannot hear the Boardwalk. We tested this out!

Why is this cruise more expensive than other Atlantis cruises?
Royal Caribbean spent $1.6 billion on building this ship… They have to get it back somehow! All kidding aside, it’s the newest, most advanced, and most spectacular ship ever built. That’s going to command a premium and our costs are a lot higher than our other cruises. Even so, our fares are still roughly the same as we charged for the Freedom of the Seas back in 2007. We think it’s still a great value for the experience.
